The answer lies in the manner in which employees are treated every day. Not just on Hawaiian Shirt Day. Not just on their birthdays. Not just at offsites. Not lipservice. Every single day of work. It's an organizational attitude, a shared attitude between management and employees. It starts at the top and trickles down.
Historically, in fear-based management structures, the tyrannt at the top rules with an iron fist. He clashes with everyone. He throws his weight around like a professional wrestler. No one wants to cross him or contradict his ideas. In short, he manages out of a place of fear and insecurity. This structure is not only outmoded, it's inhumane. Anyone who works for such an autocrat ought to quit and seek employment elsewhere. No one wins working in this fear-based environment. No one. Such organizations certainly don't take care of their people with good pay and benefits. It would be anathema to the tyrant at the top.
The reality is that people largely get their employer of choice. Positive people attract positive employers into their lives. Negative people attract negative employers into their lives. At the beginning and the end of the business day, our professions and who we work for are a personal choice. We alone are responsible for our own careers and our own success.
